Bayern Munich claimed their biggest away win in their European history, annihilating a wretched Roma outfit as they continued their perfect record in Group E of the Champions League.
Ashley Cole, who was substituted at half-time, could do little to prevent a Bayern onslaught, as the German outfit scored five goals in the first half at the Stadio Olimpico in Italy.
The visitors dominated proceedings and their early pressure resulted in a straightforward goal for Arjen Robben, who broke the deadlock after just nine minutes with a curling left-footed strike.
This was only the seventh goal Roma had conceded all season, but the German side were rampant and went on to double their lead when the top goalscorer from Bundesliga, Mario Gotze, made the most of a useful back heel from Thomas Muller.
The last time these two teams met Roma were able to overturn a two-goal deficit, but any hopes of a revival were thwarted by a routine header by Robert Lewandowski as Bayern scored their second goal in as many minutes.
Robben doubled his tally five minutes later with his fifth goal of the season, before Thomas Muller converted a penalty after 35 minutes following a hand ball by Kostas Manolas.
Roma redeemed themselves after the break, playing with much more conviction as Bayern surrendered their clean sheet when Gervinho headed a consolation goal. But it was to be only a consolation and Roma’s misery was compounded when second-half substitutes, Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri, also found the net.
